All-day breakfast spot Jam Café announces plans to open second Vancouver location

Most Vancouverites have grown used to seeing the line-ups that form outside this eatery, but that could change in a few months.

Downtown Vancouver’s Jam Café (556 Beatty Street) will be opening its second brick-and-mortar spot in the city this fall, which will hopefully curb the astronomical wait times that brunch-lovers must endure in order to get a taste of the restaurant’s popular menu items.

The highly anticipated spot will take over Bistro Patis at 2153 West 4th Avenue in Kitsilano. Guests can expect a full makeover of the space, which means there’ll be no remnants of the classic French fine-dining establishment once Jam opens.

The all-day breakfast and brunch spot is known for its hearty dishes.

“We’ve been looking for a location for over a year and a half now. We narrowed it down to a number of areas, [including] Kitsilano, Main Street, South Granville, and even North Vancouver,” Mike Deas-Dawlish, co-owner of Jam Café alongside Jim and Candy Walmsley, told the Straight in a phone interview. “Kitsilano was one we looked the hardest at. We kind of like the rustic feel on West 4th.”

The 2,200-square-foot spot will have 60 to 65 seats, complete with Jam’s signature rustic vibes that are accentuated by decorative pieces picked out by the co-owners at auctions and vintage shops.

Each location features some unique vintage items.

“The [interior] will have the old-school museum feel to it, warm and cozy with a lot of wood and some brick,” explained Deas-Dawlish. “There’s a lot of thought that actually goes into the décor. It’ll always feel like Jam when you walk in, but your eye will be drawn to something new in each location.”

As for the menu, diners will be able to order the same creations found at its sister restaurants. Hearty breakfast items such as the Charlie bowl, green eggs-and-ham, the gravy coupe, fried-chicken French toast, cinnamon cream-cheese pancakes, and red velvet pancakes will be available.

“We’re going to keep the menu the same because we just launched a new one in June. We kept the old favourites but also added some new items on,” said Deas-Dawlish. “Each chef is given a bit of leeway at each location, because they run the daily specials.”

The Victoria-based breakfast hot spot made its Vancouver debut back in 2016, and the demand for its classic dishes haven’t dwindled. In fact, Jam’s co-owner says the food outlet has been busier than ever, especially in the summer season.

He’s hoping the new location will take people out of the downtown core, and allow Kits residents a chance to try out Jam. We’re sure the accessibility will be beneficial for locals when it opens, but let’s be real: line-ups will always exist wherever this business decides to pop-up.

“I love the vibrancy of the neighbourhood, [and] I love the people in Kitsilano. I think it just suits us and our brand,” said Deas-Dawlish. “I love the brunch atmosphere out there, I think it’s great and I think there’s room for another one.”

Jam Café is scheduled to open its Kitsilano location in November.
