Air Canada’s enRoute magazine has revealed its annual list of Canada’s best new restaurants, and one Vancouver dining establishment has cracked the top 10.

St. Lawrence (269 Powell Street), known for its authentic Quebec cuisine and classic French cooking, came in fourth place. The dining spot and its proprietor, chef J-C Poirier, were voted best new restaurant and chef of the year for the Straight’s 2018 Golden Plates industry-insiders survey earlier this year.

Poirer has spearheaded many popular eateries around town, but the concept of St. Lawrence is what hits closest to home for the seasoned chef.

“It’s almost like after cooking for 20 years, I’ve finally found myself and what I like to cook,” Poirier told the Straight by phone back in March. “For me to open another restaurant would probably make no sense, because this is it. This should be my last [restaurant] because I’m very much driven by this love and passion of my culture that I sort of created for me. It’s my masterpiece.”

The only other B.C. restaurant to make it onto the coveted list is Victoria’s Courtney Room, which took home the tenth spot. Tofino’s 1909 Kitchen was one of the nominees, but didn’t end up placing among the top 10.

The Restaurant at Pearl Morissette in Ontario earned the top spot this year, while Montreal’s Vin Mon Lapin and Elena ranked second and third.
