Honolulu Coffee closes its Broadway location—but hints at new location to come
A Hawaiian coffee company's expansion into the North American mainland market has hit a snag.
Honolulu Coffee had chosen Vancouver as the starting point for its first locations in North America (Hawaii is geographically considered part of Oceania, rather than North America). It opened its first store (at 888 Nelson Street) in the Downtown Vancouver core in June 2016.
As Honolulu Coffee president Ed Schultz had told the Georgia Straight in a phone interview in March 2016, their decision upon Vancouver as their mainland launching pad was influenced by how they found Vancouverites to be both openminded and quite educated about food and drink.
Two more locations followed in 2017, with one at 548 Broadway (at Cambie Street) and another in Kerrisdale at 2096 West 1st Avenue (at East Boulevard).
The Hawaii-based company, which has its own 80-acre Kona coffee farm on the slopes of the Mauna Loa volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii, had previously opened in Japan, Guam, and China.
However, on November 30, the company announced that the Broadway location would be closed on December 1 due to "some construction issues and company restructure plan".
For those who have become fans of their Kona and Maui coffees and Hawaiian lattes, and island-influenced desserts, the Kerrisdale and Broadway locations remain open.
But the good news is that in the company's announcement of the Broadway closure, they also mentioned that a new location will be "coming soon in future". So stay tuned, caffeine addicts.
