A local Mexican streetfood restaurant is undergoing a number of changes.
After a four-year run, Tacomio closed down its Gastown location, where the chainlet launched in 2015, at 435 Abbott Street on January 16.
By phone, owner Fernando Llanas told the Georgia Straight that he closed the location for a number of reasons, including the expiration of the lease and the fact that the compact 685-square-foot space (with 14 seats) limited their capabilities there.
He said it was more of a test model, with their UBC location at 6025 University Boulevard in Point Grey (which remains open) as an example of their direction for the future.
The good news is that more locations are on the way.
Llanas said that they are still finalizing a Downtown Vancouver location but aren’t able to divulge any details about that one quite yet.
Another location will be a commissary kitchen at 1245 Glen Drive in Strathcona, which Llanas said has been in the works for the past two years.
Although this 6,000-square-foot kitchen won’t have a full-service restaurant, it will have a take-out window. Here, the menu will go beyond what’s at other locations, as they’ll be testing out new products before adding them to the menus of the other locations.
Yet another forthcoming location will be at 1300 Lonsdale Avenue in North Vancouver.
Llanas said that this spot has been delayed due to legal issues with the contractor, but he’s anticipating that it should be ready before summer.
Tacomio, which means “my taco”, serves a range of tacos, burritos, nachos, and salad bowls, all with chicken, beef, pork, and vegetarian options.
