Tired of going to the same chain restaurant for happy hour? Don’t feel like eating at that Chinese restaurant your family goes to every Saturday night?

Well, there’s an answer to your culinary woes.

Those who love to eat but want to try something new can check out these three local food and drink events happening around town this week.

      Leila Kwok

Railtown Tailgate Barbecue at Railtown Cafe (397 Railway Street)

This annual al-fresco summer barbecue series is returning on Sunday (June 23) from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and will take place on Sunday a month through the end of September. Known for its juicy grilled meats and tasty sides, guests will be able to taste everything from 35-hour Texas-style beef brisket to beer-brined Maple Hills Farms chicken. Other classic dishes like corn on the cob, corn bread, coleslaw, and potato salad will be available. Thirst-quenchers like craft beer from Strange Fellows Brewing and Good Company Lager will be poured, as well as lemonades, sangria, and iced teas. We don’t know about you, but barbecues where you don’t have to work the grill sound pretty attractive.

Tickets ($17 to $27 per person, plus taxes and fees) can be purchased online. Online tickets come with a complimentary drink voucher up to a $6 value.

      Windfall Cider

Cider Tasting Evening at the Cultch (1895 Venables Street)

If you enjoy ciders, you’ll want to mark this event in your calendars. Windfall Cider and the Cultch are teaming up to host a fundraiser: a cider tasting evening on June 27 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Guests will get to learn about the complex flavours in various ciders, sample a few of these popular libations (Windfall Cider, Lonetree Cider, Sea Cider, and more), while nibbling on some small bites. A reception will be followed in the Cultch lobby.

Tickets ($50 per person, with a $25 tax receipt) can be purchased online.

      Thomas Bullock

Sunday Movie Night Series at Bells and Whistles (3296 Fraser Street)

Movies at the cinemas are great and all, but sometimes you don’t want sit in the dark for several hours and abide by the no-talking etiquette, when all you really want to do is talk about the film with your friends. Fraserhood’s Bells and Whistles solve this problem: its Sunday Night Movie Series continues throughout the summer, and it will be showing John Candy’s Canadian Bacon on June 30 at 9 p.m. This eatery and watering hole has a lively atmosphere, and we're sure movie chit-chat is warmly welcomed.

Late-night happy hour specials start at 10 p.m., including $7 Negronis, $5.50 draft beer, $5 classic hot dogs, and $7 chili-cheese dogs and Chicago dogs. Who needs popcorn when you can get soft-serve ice cream and sundaes here?
