Photos: Bufala Edgemont brings Italian eats to North Vancouver

Bufala Edgemont recently opened its doors at 3280 Edgemont Boulevard, and the North Van outpost is not a carbon copy of the original Kerrisdale location.

Run by Gooseneck Hospitality’s James Iranzad, Josh Pape and Nick Miller—the same team behind Wildebeest, Bells and Whistles, and Lucky Taco—the new spot features some original Bufala Kerrisdale favourites. Think burrata with squash and hazelnuts; kale Caesar salad with bacon and anchovies; and margherita and finocchiona pizza (the latter with fennel sausage, caramelized onions, green olives, and smoked provolone).

Then there are new plates, like bone marrow pizza. It’s a bianco pie with cotechino sausage, leeks, mushrooms, and parsley. Perched in the centre resembling the hub of a bike wheel is an actual piece of hollowed-out bone with some of that rich marrow in the middle next to a little spoon. You can dot some of the buttery stuff on each slice before diving in, or save a smidge to spread on each crispy piece of crust. Your call.

The caponata pizza is labelled “(PB)”, as in plant-based, but you might be surprised to discover it’s vegan. Nevertheless, chances are you won’t miss the cheese on the marinara-based ’za, which has cubed eggplant, fried capers, and slices of burnt orange.

There’s a half-dozen pasta dishes to choose from, including albacore-tuna spaghetti puttanesca. This one will bring to mind a Mediterranean osteria, the noodles unfurling olives, anchovies, and capers.

Arancini is loaded with mushrooms and served with spicy, smoky aioli; mains include a braised Peace Country lamb shank.

Local craft brews dominate the beer list. The team is having fun with the drinks menu, which includes classics like Americano and Negroni; meanwhile, order a “shot” of Lambrusco, and if you’re questioning whether to sip or actually shoot it, shoot it!

Tiramisu, boozy affogato, and vanilla soft serve ice cream make up the dessert selection.

Bufala Edgemont is open on weekdays from 4 p.m. and on weekends from 11:30 a.m., with happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. to close daily.
