Starbucks is upping its plant-based game. The coffee giant has announced it's adding a new Beyond Meat, Cheddar and Egg Sandwich to its core menu.

Canada is the first market within Starbucks' global reach to serve a meatless (though not vegan) breakfast sandwich.

The sammy launches on Tuesday (March 3).

The plant-based patty, which is made with oregano, basil, rosemary, and fennel, is topped with cheddar cheese and egg and comes on an "artisanal" bun, according to a release. Starbucks worked with Beyond Meat to develop the recipe.

Besides making vegetarians happy, the news is likely to please Beyond Meat stockholders, too. When mere mention from Starbucks chief executive Kevin Johnson aired that the company was planning on addiing more plant-based items to its menu, Beyond Meat Inc.'s stock jumped 15 percent in trading on January 21, according to MarketWatch

Meanwhile, Tim Hortons has taken the opposite tack. In January, it pulled Beyond Meat products from its shops in B.C. and Ontario, after having previously removed the plant-based burgers and sandwiches from all other locations in Canada. The chain had introduced the items less than a year prior as a test.

"We will keep an item on the menu if it's favoured by our guests," Sarah McConnell, a spokeswoman for parent company Restaurant Brands International, told BNN Bloomberg. "In this case, we did not see enough demand to keep it as a permanent item."
