One of Vancouver’s longtime fine-dining restaurants, Five Sails (410–999 Canada Place), announced its closure at the end of 2019, but it has recently been reinvigorated with new life.

Local food-and-drink company Glowbal Restaurant Group (Italian Kitchen, Black and Blue, Glowbal) is now operating the iconic waterfront dining establishment.

Five Sails was previously under the helm of chef Ernst Dorfler and Gerry Sayers, until the husband-and-wife duo retired at the end of last year.

Located at the Pan Pacific Hotel at Canada Place, many of its longtime staff will continue with the restaurant, including culinary veterans chef Masa Mabuchi and sommelier Ramon Fresneda.

According to a press statement, Glowbal’s CEO Emad Yacoub states the swanky eatery will open for business as usual while it undergoes an extensive facelift, which will re-launch with a more “modern upscale design”.

“We were thrilled to come on board with Five Sails earlier this year, and have been welcoming tourists and locals in the dining room throughout the winter season,” said Yacoub. “We hope to offer guests a fresh new dining experience while continuing to honour the important legacy of this iconic Vancouver restaurant.”

On its website, Five Sails currently features a dinner menu with appetizers and mains like Quebec foie gras, beef tartare, warm Dungeness crab cake, mushroom risotto, pan-seared sea bass piccata, smoked and pan-seared sablefish, honey-glazed smoked duck breast, and wagyu beef.

A lengthy dessert selection is also available, showcasing creations like its classic luxe-lemon millefeuilles, chocolate opera slice, warm apple strudel, Five Sails grand marnier soufflé, and more.
