Vancouver chef Angus An, who is the chef and owner of Kitsilano’s Maenam, has opened a second Thai restaurant in New Westminster. Longtail Kitchen (116-810 Quayside Drive) is a casual, fast-food eatery located inside the River Market.

Longtail’s menu ($6 to $12) riffs on Thai street-food favourites, including papaya salad, chicken wings, deep-fried oysters, fish stews, curries, and pad thai. The restaurant’s décor, which was inspired by night markets in Asia, includes paper lanterns, reclaimed wood, and colourful plastic chairs.

One wall of the restaurant will be dedicated to selling kitchenware and Thai cooking necessities, such as mortars and pestles, spices and sauces, and cookbooks. Meanwhile, diners have the option of taking their meals to-go, dining inside the restaurant, or heading onto River Market’s patio, which overlooks the Fraser River.

An opened Maenam in 2009, and in 2010, he was voted Best Chef by his peers during the Georgia Straight’s 13th annual Golden Plate Awards.

I was here on the weekend, and it was very nice. The kitchen is a small, fun open concept - the menu suits it. Lots of fresh seafood, shellfish, noodles, and curries or soups on the menu. I tried the Pad Thai - it was very good, with robust noodles, flavourful shrimp, and a really authentic tasting cause.

Seating is small - maybe a cozy 30 seats possible if they add tables, but it's augmented by the River Market's patio and lounge area. It's got a lovely location, especially in the summer - I would definitely be back.
