Chewies Steam & Oyster Bar opens Coal Harbour restaurant

Two years after opening Chewies Steam & Oyster Bar (2201 West 1st Avenue), owner Richard Chew—also known as “Chewie”—has launched a downtown location.

Taking over the spot previously occupied by Miku restaurant, the restaurant at 110-1055 West Hastings Street is situated on the ground floor or an office tower. The sleek room features leather banquette seating and dark wood fixtures—starkly different from its casual Kitsilano counterpart.

The menu, which focuses on oysters and Southern-style comfort food, differs slightly at each location. Fans of Chewies’ panko-crusted pan-fried Fanny Bay oysters, honey-drizzled fried chicken, spicy jambalaya, and blackened chicken po’boys will find these popular dishes at both restaurants.

At the Coal Harbour location, diners will also be able to sample new menu items, such as pork belly crackling served with Cajun sweet-and-sour sauce, chicken-fried gator (yes, alligator) and corn hush puppies, fried green tomatoes topped with grilled tiger prawns, house-smoked baby back ribs, and butter-poached lobster. Appetizers are priced between $10 and $16, while main dishes run from $18 to $36.

Unlike the Kitsilano restaurant, the downtown location does not serve weekend brunch but is open for lunch Mondays to Fridays and dinner every night.

Are you kidding me??? The biggest appeal that restaurant has to me are the male model waiters. So tired of going to restaurants where I'm served by goodlooking women pretending to be ditzy to get more tips. Finally a place that caters to women!! We wanna take a looksie too sometimes ;)
