The owners of the Vancouver Canucks have added another business to their portfolio. Aquilini Investment Group has acquired Toptable Group, which oversees five restaurants in Vancouver and Whistler, according to an announcement today (March 18).

“I’m proud of the three-decade reputation Toptable Group has established, which is built on the foundation of pursuing excellence without compromise, a generosity of spirit, and a love of food and wine,” Jack Evrensel, former Toptable Group proprietor, stated in a news release. “I am also very pleased that the Aquilinis will bring their passion for hospitality to Toptable. This is a very positive alignment that will ensure the continuity of all Toptable properties.”

Established in 1981 with the opening of Whistler’s Araxi Restaurant + Bar, Toptable Group includes Blue Water Cafe + Raw Bar (1095 Hamilton Street), CinCin Restaurant + Bar (1154 Robson Street), West Restaurant (2881 Granville Street), and Thierry Chocolaterie Patisserie Cafe (1059 Alberni Street).

The Aquilini Investment Group, a Vancouver-based family business headed by Francesco Aquilini, is best known for their ownership of Vancouver’s NHL hockey team and Rogers Arena. The company is also involved in real estate development, renewable energies, agriculture, and recreation.

This could be very bad news for these restaurants especially if you are an employee and think you are deserving of respectful working conditions.

Expect food quality to go way down and prices to go even higher.

There's no buckets of money in owning restaurants. You run it and break even because it's what you love to do. If they are thinking about profiting then yes, the food quality will nosedive and prices skyrocket.

If they manage their restaurants like they manage the Canucks, they will definitely fail!

I didn't know this. I hate team sports, especially the Canucks, with a burning passion. I will now avoid these restaurants whenever I can.

Oh Hazlit. What do you think will happen? That you'll walk into the restaurant... the hostesses will take turns picking the diners (you'll be picked last)... on the way to the table, the good-looking tall waiters will snigger and flick at you with their bar towels?

      High school is OVAH!

I wonder what level of arrogance makes the Acquilinis think they can cut it in the restaurant business?
