The Fairmont Pacific Rim is now the owner of a rare, $45,000 bottle of Balvenie whisky.

The hotel was the lucky winner in a random draw for the Balvenie Fifty, a 50-year-old single malt from Scotland, which took place last night at the B.C. Liquor Store on Cambie Street.

The whisky is one of only 131 bottles in the world and the only bottle released in Canada this year.

Grant Sceney, head bartender at the Fairmont Pacific Rim, tells the Straight by phone that the hotel has plans to make the whisky available to patrons of its Lobby Lounge, though details surrounding its release are still unclear.

“When you’re serving a whisky like this, you want it to be an experience,” says Sceney. “We’ll need to have the proper crystalware or whisky glasses.”

The sale price is also yet to be determined. However, given that the 26-ounce bottle was purchased for $45,000, you can expect to pay at least a cool $2,000 per ounce.
