Concrete has been poured. Equipment is coming. With water and electricity connections happening on time, Faculty Brewing Co. is opening in Vancouver hopefully by the end of April, says founder Mauricio Lozano.

“We start brewing and the fun stuff,” Lozano told the Straight by phone.

Currently under construction at 1830 Ontario Street, Faculty aims to produce beer offerings using simple ingredients, carving its unique place in local craft beer scene.

In addition, the microbrewery also wants to infuse more life in its industrial setting in the neighbourhood of Mount Pleasant.

With this mind, the company has applied through Simcic + Uhrich Architects with the City of Vancouver to convert its approved tasting room into a lounge.

On January 29, city hall released a public notice about the development application of the brewery for the planned conversion. Comments submitted as of February 12 will be considered by staff in reviewing the application.

Lozano explained that every brewery is allowed to have a tasting room. According to him, customers in a tasting room can be served 12 ounces of beer only.

With a lounge, visitors can sample more, and stay a bit longer. “You can come to the brewery, and also hang out,” Lozano said.

According to him, that’s a positive thing for industrial areas that can be a bit “sketchy” especially at night.

With a lounge, Lozano said that there will be more people around walking by or riding their bikes. “It actually adds a little bit of life to the city. It makes it safer. There’s less graffiti to the buildings.”

With work going on for Faculty, Lozano promises: “It’s a nice place.”
