Loblaw stores in B.C. now selling “ugly” produce in effort to reduce food waste

Select Real Canadian Superstore, No Frills, and Your Independent Grocer stores in B.C. are now stocking their shelves with misshapen produce.

The marred and oddly shaped fruits and vegetables are part of Loblaw’s new no name Naturally Imperfect line, which is offered for 30 percent less than the traditional retail price of their more “attractive” counterparts.

The line first launched in Ontario and Quebec last year and has now expanded into B.C. Bags of no name Naturally Imperfect apples and bell peppers are currently available for purchase in Vancouver with more options to come later this year.

The issue of food waste has become a hot topic in recent years, with one New Westminster man setting up a recycling program that repurposes excess food from grocery stores into warm meals for social service agencies and those in need.

Last year, local chef and restauranteur David Gunawan also conducted a series of Ugly Duckling dinners, where he transformed discarded kitchen scraps into high-calibre dishes through a concept that he calls “trash cooking”.
