Get a dose of Japanese street-food atmosphere at Benkei Noodle Shop

You could satisfy your ramen craving at Benkei Noodle Shop (545 West Broadway), but if you visit the restaurant’s booth at the Richmond Night Market (8351 River Road, Richmond), you’ll get a nice dose of Japanese street-food atmosphere.

At the market, you can watch staff use a blowtorch to roast the corn kernels and add a touch of char to the pork while you wait in anticipation. There’s something about slurping a bowl of steaming Tokyo shoyu ramen ($6) in the chilly fall air that makes the soup extra gratifying.

The market continues Fridays through Sundays (and Thanksgiving Monday) until October 13.

Living in Japan for awhile makes it really hard to come back to Vancouver and enjoy the Japanese food here. So much is done wrong, badly, or just done weirdly, like finding things like mushrooms or jjabchae (Korean sweet potato noodles) in your Katsudon (which typically features neither). Benkei ramen has always been my favourite place for cheap Japanese food in Vancouver, since their ramen, gyoza, and their curry rice are all pretty close to what you actually would expect at a Japanese ramen shop. Their spicy miso is particularly tasty!
