Where to get takeout turkey and Thanksgiving dinner in Vancouver

    1 of 1 2 of 1

It's less than a week until Thanksgiving Day—about the time many people realize they don't want to cook the big dinner they want to eat on Monday (October 13).

Or they've volunteered to host but now are just a wee bit in over their heads with all those side dishes. (Why doesn't somebody offer to bring the pie?)

Or they're having a party of one (or two) and don't need a big bird but want still want to celebrate.

Fear not: there are plenty of takeout turkey options in Vancouver. Here's a sampling to get you started.

      Whole Foods Market

Whole Foods is a good place to pick up a few extra sides to mix and match with what you've already got under control. If you just need stuffing for example, you can get enough to feed four or eight ($14.99 or $24.99).

Or, you can get a complete set of side dishes including stuffing, green beans, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry relish, rolls, and a pumpkin pie. (This side dish collection runs $49.99 for four people, $69.99 for eight.)

For full meals, there are plenty of options for four or eight people, based not only on a whole bird but turkey breast, pork loin, ham, or vegan field roast.

Be aware that the meals that include whole turkeys come with uncooked whole turkeys, so while the rest is taken care of, you'll need to prep and dote on the bird.

A traditional turkey meal for eight people, with an 8.8 to 13 pound JD Farms uncooked turkey, costs $159. That includes stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, gravy, cranberry relish, rolls, and pumpkin pie.

The stores are running enhanced guest services counters to place Thanksgiving order, or you can peruse the menu and order online. Allow 48 hours notice and note that online orders must be placed by Saturday October 11.

      Urban Fare

Options vary by store location. At the Coal Harbour store, for example, the catering department has no pre-set takeout meals on offer, but if you call them at least 24 hours in advance, they can customize a prepared meal for a specific number of people.

On Monday (October 13), the restaurant at the Coal Harbour Urban Fare will be offering individual meals centred around stuffed turkey breast. For $13.99, it comes with two side dishes like mashed potatoes and veggies plus gravy and cranberry sauce. The cafe is licensed, so you can have a glass of wine along with it if you would rather not take it all back home.

      The Sutton Place Hotel

Here's a posh option if you're hosting and you need the whole shebang looked after. The meal serves 8 to 12 people, and you pick it up hot and ready to go with all the trimmings. It includes an 18-pound roast turkey, apple sage stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy, rolls, and pumpkin pie.

The price is $325 and you need to order by noon on Thursday (October 9). Pick-up is availabe for Saturday, October 11 through Monday, October 13. To order call 604.682.5511 ext. 34.

      L’Epicerie Rotisserie & Gourmet Shop

This rotisserie shop on Granville Island is a good option if you're looking to feed just one or two people. It's offering a three-course prix fixe dinner to go for $24.99 per person, which includes a duck confit tartlet with salad to start, a boneless turkey leg with cranberry sauce, truffled mashed potatoes, roasted squash and veggies for the main course, and a mango mousse or berry Charlotte for dessert.

If you just want the main course, that's available for $14.99 per person. Since you'll be on Granville Island to pick it up, you could always seek out some delicious pate or charcuterie from Oyama Sausage to start the meal and pumpkin pie to end it.

The turkey dinners are available from Friday (October 10) through Monday (October 13) with a minimum of 24 hours advance notice for orders at 604-653-7317.

So which restaurants in Vancouver will have turkey dinners with mash potatoes and gravy for thanksgiving that don't charge $325?

Remember when the Georgia Straight was an edgy informative magazine full of social commentary for the average citizens of Vancouver? Now it's just another elitist lifestyle rag like the Westender. So disappointing.
