Parallel 49 Brewing to preview new tasting-room offerings at Commercial Drive pop-up

If the temporary closure of Parallel 49’s tasting room has left a giant hole in your cold, craft beer–fueled heart, don’t fret: the East Van brewery has announced that it will be conducting a “pop-up tasting room” on Commercial Drive from March 3 to 5.

The three-day event will take place at Merchant’s Workshop (1590 Commercial Drive), also known as Merchant’s Oyster Bar, and will feature BBQ and “street food–inspired” dishes, as well as limited-release and small-batch beers that will soon be available at Parallel 49’s new in-house restaurant and tasting room.

The food program will be led by Parallel 49’s chef, Jason Harper, and the beers will be crafted by the establishment’s longtime brewmaster, Graham With.

Admission to the pop-up is free. It kicks off on March 3 from 5 p.m. to 12 a.m. and will open from 11 a.m. to 12 a.m. on March 4 and from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on March 5.

Parallel 49 has been closed for renovations since January and is expected to reopen late March. In an interview with the Straight in December, co-owner Anthony Frustagli shared that the revamped space will maintain its industrial East Van vibe, but will be reconfigured to allow room for additional seating and a kitchen.

“We’re kind of taking a step back and saying, ‘Okay, this room has become a really important part of our business,’ ” he said. “And we never really put much thought or money or time into designing it or making it as cool as we want it to be.”
