Attention all B.C. seafood lovers: Spot prawn season is almost here

June 4 is the start of the short season that brings in one of our ocean's most prized delicacies

This year's spot-prawn season kicks off on June 4.

That means that consumers, chefs, and diners will be able to get their hot little hands on the firm, sweet shrimp beginning June 5.

"The season was delayed a month or so because of lack of markets due to COVID19," says Steve Johansen of Organic Ocean Seafood. "It’s kinda cool that restaurants here in Vancouver are starting to open up around the same time, as a lot of chefs in this city love to work with what's probably the most celebrated food ingredient in the country."

Look for Organic Ocean at False Creek Fishermans Wharf, where it will be selling freshly and sustainbly caught wild spot prawns daily from approximately 1 p.m. onward for five to six weeks.

To find out other places to pick up spot prawns, check out Pacific Prawn Fishermen's Association or BC Prawns. Contact your local fishmonger and/or favourite restaurants to see if they're offering them this year.

Sadly, due to COVID19, the annual BC Spot Prawn Festival has been cancelled for 2020.

Wondering what to do with them if you're cooking at home? Check out the Spot Prawn Festival website for a selection of recipes by several B.C. chefs.
