Long gone are the days of prohibition, but speakeasies live on in Vancouver. Whether it’s the initial “Am I in the right place?” feeling or the IYKYK vibes, a hidden bar always seems to be a hit with locals and tourists alike.

Bagheera, with its unique blend of references to The Jungle Book (the bar is named after the black panther from the story) and India during colonization, was just named the best new bar in the country by Canada’s 100 Best.

Bagheera came in at number 20 overall, with sister spot Laowi clocking in at number 17, the Fairmont Pacific Rim’s Botanist at number 21, and The Keefer Bar (which also recently won the Golden Plates Award for Best Cocktail Bar) nabbing number eight.

“Everyone—the whole Bagheera team, as well as the team at Laowai—is really excited to see their hard work recognized,” shares Lewis Hart of Three Kingdoms Hospitality, owners and operators of both venues, in a release. “We’re proud to represent our city on a national level and to foster a love of cocktail culture on the West Coast.”

To see all the hype, head to Chinatown, look for the fictional Happy Valley Turf Club, and place your bets on “King Louie.”

Bagheera is located at 518 Main Street.
