Somehow, it seems fitting. As the western world teeters on the edge of a recession, hordes of Vancouverites will dress in their finest whites to enjoy a stylish outdoor feast where all of that can be forgotten.

Yes, we're talking about Le Dîner en Blanc, which is returning after a two-year hiatus on August 18.

The outdoor location remains secret—only those able to secure a ticket will find out after they first gather at an assigned departure site.

Yes, there's a dress code: elegant and white only, to match the white tablecloths.

Guests are required to cart away their leftovers and trash, leaving the location as spotless afterward as it was beforehand.

These dinners were launched in France in 1988 and have since spread to cities around the world.

"Participation to this unique event happens in three stages: Phase 1 is for members from the previous edition; Phase 2 is for new members who are referred by Phase I attendees; and Phase 3 is for people who signed up for the waiting list," a news release states. "To get the opportunity to be part of the experience, people can sign up now by visiting vancouver.dinerenblanc.com and clicking on the Register tab."
