Tacofino updates: White Rock opening, Gastown closing

You know how they say when one door closes, another opens? That’s the case for Tacofino this season—literally.

The beloved West Coast Mexcian restaurant is set to open its 10th Mainland location—this one in White Rock—on May 17.

At the same time, the company is getting ready to bid farewell to its popular Gastown location, which will close in August.

“After a decade of great food, amazing people, and lots of laughs, our [Gastown] doors will soon close, not by choice, but by change,” shares Gino Di Domenico, managing partner of Tacofino, in a statement. “Tacofino Gastown was more than a restaurant to me; it is home to memories I’ll carry forever. To our team and community, our heart: thank you. Each of you shaped this journey. Here’s to the good times past, and to new adventures to come.”

The closure is due to an expiring lease and a building with a slated redevelopment. But Vancouverites who want a taste of the fish burritos or the nachos will still have plenty of places to do so, including locations in Mount Pleasant, Kits, and Yaletown.

And White Rock residents will be able to get in on the fun, too, with this new location that will serve classics, like fish tacos and crispy chicken burritos, as well as a selection of local beers and its popular margaritas. Inspired by the free-spirit vibe of the West Coast, the decor echoes sentiments of our flower-power history.

“The concept for the space is to create an interior with a retro vibe reminiscent of the poster art and psychedelic patterns from the ‘70s along the West Coast,” shares designer Shiloh Sakkau in a release. “It blends materials and colours unique to this location with more familiar Tacofino elements.”

Ahead of its grand opening, Tacofino will participate in the White Rock Beach cleanup hosted by Surfrider Foundation.
