With many small businesses shuttered because of the pandemic, keeping neighbourhoods alive has never been more important.

As a company dedicated to operating diners on the west side of Vancouver, Fiore Famiglia Restaurants Ltd. knows the critical role played by local establishments in creating a vibrant community.

Fiore Famiglia Restaurants is the entity behind The Stable House Bistro (1520 West 13th Avenue), Fiore (1485 West 12th Avenue), and Fiore Famiglia (2603 West 16th Avenue).

In a letter to city hall, the company recalled that the idea of expanding a restaurant was previously “unthinkable” a year ago as COVID-19 started.

However, the pandemic has provided valuable lessons that reinforce the importance of activity on the streets.

The company has applied to expand Fiore Famiglia into an adjacent business space at 2607 West 16th Avenue, which was previously used for retail.

Fiore Famiglia is the Italian restaurant that replaced the old French dining spot, Trafalgars Bistro.

The establishment currently has 40 interior and 26 patio seats.

In its letter that forms part of a development permit application, the restaurant group explained that the “primary focus of the additional          space will be to  provide supplemental food storage/prep space,   a management office and             access to an additional washroom (existing to remain)”.

“Only about 40% of the  new space will be dedicated to a proposed dining/bar area with additional patron seating for an anticipated occupant load of just under 100 people (including patio seating and staff),” the company stated.

The expansion will also add 20 interior and eight patio seats.

The City of Vancouver will accept comments about the development application until November 1.
