Ways to celebrate BC’s spot prawn season

Get your bibs ready—spot prawn season is upon us.

This versatile seafood is a local favourite, with restaurants serving up unique dishes during the short window when it’s at its freshest. Here are some delicious ideas for how to participate in our elusive spot prawn season.

      Straight and Marrow

For those who cannot get enough spot prawns, Straight and Marrow in East Van offers a five-course dinner with them in every dish. Think: spot prawn carpaccio, spot prawn risotto, and even a corn panna cotta with spot prawn powder. Because of the limited nature of the seafood, this dinner will be served on one day only (May 27) across three different times. Save your seat here.

      Longtail Kitchen

A fan favourite, Longtail Kitchen in New Westminster will feature a la carte spot prawn features on the weekend that the seafood is in season. No official word yet on exact dates or what these offerings will be, but if it’s anything like last year’s BBQ anniversary bash, diners can expect fresh Asian flavours. Keep an eye on its Instagram for updates.

Holy Duck Chili x Fresh Ideas Start Here

Turn up the heat with this limited-edition collaboration that cannot be missed. Fresh Ideas Start Here is a trailblazer in procuring and selling sustainable local seafood to the Lower Mainland, while Holy Duck makes some of the best local chilli oil with a Cantonese twist. Together, they’re offering the Spot Prawn Supreme Chili Oil, made with Chinese spices, prawn juice, and shallots.

Fresh Ideas Start Here is also offering four ready-to-eat, take-home spot prawn options: prawn cakes, a quesadilla, mac and cheese, and simple spot prawns paired with a yuzu aioli dipping sauce.

      Spot Prawn Festival

Head to the Fisherman’s Wharf in False Creek on May 26 for an outdoor festival celebrating all things spot prawn. There will be multiple vendors and chefs onsite with samples and food stations galore, and the chance to opt in for a six-dish brunch featuring, of course, this tiny but mighty crustacean.
