The long-range forecast calls for clear skies all summer. Terrible news for rain enthusiasts, but great news for the Vancouver Mural Fest (VMF), which is bringing back its annual Mount Pleasant Street Party for the first time since 2019.

“The Mount Pleasant Street Party has been one of Vancouver Mural Festival’s signature events since the festival began in 2016,” said Adrian Sinclair, VMF co-founder and director of engagement, in a release. “ We’re excited to bring back this family-friendly event and connect folks through community arts, music and performances.”

Between August 10 to 13, five zones around the Art Motel (the City Centre Artist Lodge at Main Street and 6th Avenue) and surrounding streets will offer attendees DJs, live music, food trucks, beer garden, an artisanal market, and more—free, and open to guests of all ages.

This isn’t  the only thing that VMF has got planned. Between August 4 and 13, there’s going to be events all over the city to add more colour to Vancouver.

Official by-donation tours will take place across Mount Pleasant, Strathcona, the River District, downtown and the West End—with Vocal Eye leading tours for blind and partially sighted guests—showcasing neighbourhood murals and behind-the-scenes stories on the artwork.

Astro Alley, a live mural jam and art exhibition, will see 20 artists painting the walls behind Astro Studios (163 West 3rd Avenue) between August 5 to 7.

August 4 sees the VMF celebrate Pride weekend with the Public Disco Pride Special, a 10-hour party at the Cobalt and Boxcar that culminates with a drag and burlesque show hosted by local legend Toddy

“The festival embodies our vision for a more fun city, connected by art, music

and public space,” said Nickolas Collinet, VMF senior project manager and Public Disco founder, in a release.

And East Side Studio’s new events space, the Birdhouse, is also going to be at the centre of several festivities—hosting a two-vs-two dance battle and party on August 11, and a night of underground house and techno on August 12 (billed as VMF After Dark Night 1: Last Night a DJ Saved My Life and VMF After Dark Night 2: Public Disco).

The Birdhouse will also play host to DJ and producer Skratch Bastid’s travelling grill and dance party, Bastid’s BBQ, on August 13.

More information about murals and artists will be released later this month.

Vancouver Mural Festival runs from August 4 to 13. The Mount Pleasant Street Party takes place from August 10 to 13 at the City Centre Artist Lodge. More information is available here.
