Amazon announced its short list of 20 cities that are still in the running as potential locations for its second North American headquarters.

Unfortunately, Vancouver didn't make the cut. Other Canadian cities that also failed to make the list include Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Montreal.

The only Canadian city that advanced this round was Toronto while the remaining 19 cities are all American.

Seattle-based Amazon announced its search for a location for its $5-billion second headquarters on September 7. It had received 238 applications and will make its decision later this year.

Vancouver's joint bid with Surrey to become the location of Amazon HQ2 included $50,000 in funding from the provincial government. Mayor Gregor Robertson had also expressed interest in the tech company opening in Vancouver.

In addition to Toronto, the remaining cities being considered for Amazon HQ2, which will employ up to an estimated 50,000 people, are:

      • Atlanta, Georgia
      • Austin, Texas
      • Boston, Massachusetts
      • Chicago, Illinois
      • Columbus, Ohio
      • Dallas, Texas
      • Denver, Colorado
      • Indianapolis, Indiana
      • Los Angeles, California
      • Miami, Florida
      • Montgomery County, Maryland
      • Nashville, Tennessee
      • Newark, New Jersey
      • New York City, New York
      • Northern Virginia, Virginia
      • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
      • Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
      • Raleigh, North Carolina
      • Toronto, Ontario
      • Washington, D.C.

The only West Coast city to make the list was Los Angeles. The majority of the cities were located in the eastern half of the United States.

On November 4, Amazon had announced the opening of a second corporate office in Vancouver at 402 Dunsmuir Street that will employ about 1,000 people.
