Locally and ethically made fashions on show at First Pick Handmade's spring edition
Forget the mall: get prepped for sunny days ahead at First Pick Handmade’s first spring edition, a local market that will bring a slate of ethically produced and one-of-a-kind apparel to Mount Pleasant on March 17 and 18.
Taking place at Heritage Hall (3102 Main Street), the seasonal shopping event will feature over 30 designers from across Canada hawking a selection of one-off, limited-run, and sustainably crafted men’s and women’s clothing and accessories. Expect ecofriendly two-pieces from Bikini Empire, hemp Ts and tanks from Novel Supply Co., pleated trousers from DRZDWSK, and more. An assortment of natural skincare products from brands such as Quw’utsun’ Made and Conscious Care will also be available.
“Shows like First Pick Handmade really help consumers with ethical and slow fashion purchasing decisions,” said Janna Hurtzig, founder of First Pick Handmade, in a media release. “Many consumers want to be more responsible with their consumer dollars, but it can be hard to wade through websites and online stores.”
The inaugural First Pick Handmade took place last summer. It was founded by Hurtzig, who also co-organizes Shiny Fuzzy Muddy and operates local labels Winterluxe Recycled Cashmere and Astrosatchel, as a way to help Vancouverites discover and access “slow fashion” garments. Admission is $3 at the door or online.
