Shop Goss: Much & Little stocks one-of-a-kind products with a story

Shop Goss is the Georgia Straight’s weekly feature, where we give you the lowdown on Metro Vancouver’s coolest independent boutiques—and the spirited minds behind them—that deserve a spot on your shopping radar.

This week, we meet Sarah Savoy, owner of Mount Pleasant's Much & Little (2541 Main Street).

Describe your business in three sentences or less.

I would describe my shop as a lifestyle boutique that focuses on thoughtfully made clothing, home goods, and gifts, where items are hand-chosen for aesthetics, function, and the stories behind the product. We especially love handcrafted items and supporting small, independent designers and businesses.

How did you come to own/operate your own shop?

I'm not sure if I have a straightforward answer to this question, but it came about out of necessity. When my son was old enough to go to school and I was ready to get back into the workforce full time, I found that it was really hard to find meaningful work.

My background was so varied, and it was difficult finding something I passionately wanted to do. So I decided to create something myself... and the idea of a store that carried well-made goods that are not commonly found elsewhere was born.

My favourite brands we carry at the moment are…

It's hard to narrow it down to my favourite brands because I love so many of them! But for clothing, I really love Ursa Minor (designed and made in Montreal) and Des Petits Hauts (from Paris).

I also love Sydney Hale Co. for their candles (a shop staple) and AW by Andrea Wong for her leather goods (locally made). Wolf Circus Jewelry (also a local talent) and jadeite glassware from Mosser Glass are my other faves.

You’re being sent to a desert island with limited Wi-Fi access for an indefinite amount of time. What three products in the shop right now would you take with you?

The book 200 Women: Who Will Change the Way You See the World to keep me inspired; a case of Omnom chocolate bars so I have something to eat; and a Pendleton blanket to keep me warm a night.

Name new arrival you can’t wait to show off.

All the amazing summer clothing that's coming in the door!

What’s the weirdest, wackiest, or most out-there item on your shelves or racks at the moment?

Definitely the ostrich pillow: it's a soft, puffy sack you put over your head. It has a breathing hole and holes to stick your hands in—basically a pillow for serious nappers.

My last purchase—from the store or otherwise—was…

A licorice-and-sea-salt chocolate bar by Omnom.

When I’m not at the shop, you can find me…

In Whistler trying to keep up with my son on the slopes or doing something outside, grocery shopping in my running shoes, or just curled up on my sofa with a glass of wine.

What’s another local business you love?

There are many local businesses that I love so it's hard to narrow it down, but Nineteen Ten (4366 Main Street) is a lovely gem of a shop further up Main Street. Blossom & Vine Floral Co. (156 East 11th Avenue) is my new neighbour and I'm so glad she is there, and Ivy Lashes is my no-fail eyelash gal whom I depend on to help me look my best!
