Port of Vancouver, operator of Canada Place, has cancelled its annual Canada Day parade for 2018.

In a statement on the Canada Place website, organizers cited increasing costs as the reason the procession will not go on. However, Port of Vancouver will continue with its Canada Day at Canada Place event, which is billed as the nation’s largest Canada Day celebration outside of Ottawa.

“Please note that after careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to no longer host the Canada Day parade,” reads the announcement. “As overall costs continue to increase for such a large event, we are focusing our resources on the core elements of Canada Day at Canada Place to ensure we can continue to produce the best possible event for all attendees.”

Port of Vancouver has been producing Canada Day at Canada Place for more than three decades, though it wasn’t until 2009 that the parade portion of the fete was introduced. The free procession typically included a diverse range of representatives, performers, and other entertainers from community-oriented organizations. Its route ran through downtown Vancouver.

Canada Day at Canada Place 2018 will take place on July 1 at Canada Place and surrounding city streets. The free, family-friendly shindig will include a citizenship ceremony, kids’ area, fireworks show, and performance by Regina-born country singer JoJo Mason, among other highlights.
