An Indo Canadian student in Grade 7 has been recycling bottles over the past four months for a worthy cause.

This isn’t the first time that Tavisha Kochhar—who goes to Goldstone Park elementary school in Surrey—has done something like this.

Last summer, she collected $800 to help those affected by B.C. wildfires by selling pencil holders, which she made with recycled tin cans.

This year, she decided to make contributions to the annual radiothon by Spice Radio for B.C. Children’s Hospital. So recycled bottles and raised $315.

Encouraged by appreciation she has received, Tavisha is now working on another project of painting beer bottles to turn them into vases and decoration pieces, which can be sold for a good cause in the near future.

On being asked why she is so deeply involved in recycling, she told Straight “It helps the environment."

She said that that her parents, Rajeev Kochhar and Poonam Arora Kochhar, are her biggest inspiration in her life as it is them who taught her to help others.

Tavisha also has a Facebook page called Helping Hands and says, “If we all can help, we should.”

She will be joining the Spice Radio team on Sunday (June 3) to present a $25,000 cheque to the B.C. Children’s Hospital with money was raised last month. Spice Radio and Radio Rim Jhim have been raising funds for B.C. Children’s Hospital since 1989.
