      CONCERTS

      New Orleans husband-and-wife dance-music duo Quintron & Miss Pussycat plays the Biltmore Cabaret.

      American pop band We Are Scientists plays the Fox Cabaret, with guests Beverly.

      The second day of FVDED in the Park features performances by KYGO, Kehlani, Brockhampton, Illenium, Lil Skies, BAZZI, Slander, Whethan, Grandtheft, Smooky MarGielaa, Harrison Broome, Robotaki, Chris Lake, Destructo, Graves, A.CHAL, and Tails at Surrey's Holland Park.

      Winnipeg rock band Suburban Hypocrites plays the SBC Restaurant, with local guests Precious Dudes and Functor.

      Vancouver rock band PigpeN plays the Railway Stage and Beer Café, with guests Raincity Blue, the Bicycle Gypsies, and Jeremy Tardif Band.

      The Roots Party at the ANZA Club features highly danceable traditional beats from around the globe.

      BENEFITS

      In celebration of Canucks Autism Network's 10th anniversary, the CAN Birthday Festival at Surrey Civic Plaza features family-friendly games, an outdoor carnival, food trucks, vendors, an appearance by Vancouver Canucks mascot FIN, and musical performances by Bobs & Lolo and the Famous Players Band. Free admission, but guests are asked to bring a non-perishable food item for the Surrey Food Bank.

      The Richmond Night Market features dozens of food stalls, a dinosaur park, paddle boats, a baby playground, music, martial arts, and dancing.

      Sins of the City Walking Tour at the Vancouver Police Museum takes participants on a 90-minute tour of Strathcona.

      The two-day Carnaval del Sol at Concord Pacific Place features live music, art, dance, sports, and poetry in celebration of Latin American culture.

       

      KIDS' STUFF

      Playland at the PNE features over 30 rides, including the Revelation, the Hellevator, the Beast, Hells Gate, the Flume, and the 60-year-old wooden rollercoaster.

       

      SPORTS

      The Vancouver Whitecaps take on the Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer action at BC Place Stadium.

      The Vancouver Canadians take on the Spokane Indians in Minor League Soccer action at Nat Bailey Stadium.

       

      COMEDY

      Sam Tonning hosts Comedy Shocker XVII at the Rickshaw Theatre, with Mark Hughes, Yumi Nagashima, Stuart Jones, Kyle P. Ferris, and headliner Brett Martin (above).

      Comedy duo composed of Jenny Rubé & Ronald Dario performs sketch comedy and improv at Little Mountain Gallery.

      Canadian comedian James Kennedy performs the second of two nights of standup at the Comedy Mix.

       

      ARTS ETCETERA

      The eighth annual Indian Summer Festival runs to July 15 at various Vancouver venues, featuring a wide range of artists, from the inheritors of ancient oral storytelling traditions to genre-defying musicians, acclaimed novelists, and provocative visual, performance and culinary artists. Performers tonight include Anishinaabeg writer and musician Leanne Betasamosake Simpson (above), who takes part in Confluence at the Imperial.

      Summer Arts Festival at Deer Lake Gallery includes a painting competition, kids' workshop, artisan market, and live music.

      Douglas Coupland’s new radical art installation at the Vancouver Aquarium, Vortex, takes an imaginative journey to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, immersing viewers in the ocean-plastic pollution crisis.

      Nakkita Trimble will discuss her thoughts and teachings around Indigenous tattooing at an artist talk and workshop at Bill Reid Gallery.

      Vancouver artist and filmmaker Carole Itter presents an informal talk about her artwork and writings as part of the The Blue Cabin Speaker Series at Grunt Gallery. 

       

      DANCE

      Karolina Turek

      The Dancing on the Edge Festival features over 30 performances--with artists from Canada, Belgium, and South Korea performing in full-length and mixed-bill programs, as well as site-specific works--at various Vancouver venues.

      Bharata Natyam dancer Aishwarya Roshan performs a program choreographed by Jai Govinda, artistic director of Mandala Arts and Culture, at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.

       

      MUSIC

      Concerto soloists from the Vancouver Symphony Orchestral Institute at Whistler perform works by Mozart, Vaughan-Williams, Rossini, and Sibelius with the UBC Chamber Orchestra at Chan Shun Concert Hall.

         

      THEATRE

      David Cooper

      The Arts Club Theatre Company presents Once--Enda Walsh's musical about a struggling Dublin street musician who chances upon a girl who challenges him to go for his dream--at Granville Island Stage.

      The Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival presents performances of Macbeth and Lysistrata in Vanier Park.

      The Arts Club Theatre Company presents Mamma Mia!, a feel-good musical featuring the music of ABBA, at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage.

      Staged reading at Pacific Theatre of 'da Kink in My Hair, Trey Anthony's work about a hairdresser who can read secrets from her clients' hair.

       

      GALLERIES

      Cabin Fever at the Vancouver Art Gallery traces the history of the North American cabin as an architectural form and cultural construct.

      David Milne: Modern Painting at the Vancouver Art Gallery features close to 90 works in oil and watercolour, never-before-presented photographs, drawings, and memorabilia.

      Emily Carr in Dialogue with Mattie Gunterman is a new exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery featuring the paintings of Carr with 48 photographs by U.S.-born photographer Gunterman.

      Shigeru Ban, a new exhibition at Vancouver Art Gallery’s Offsite location, features the full-scale version of Japanese architect Shigeru Ban’s Kobe Paper Log House.

       

      MUSEUMS

      Haida Now: A Visual Feast of Innovation and Tradition at the Museum of Vancouver is guest-curated by Kwiaahwah Jones and features more than 450 works by carvers, weavers, photographers and print makers, collected as early as the 1890s.

      Wild Things: The Power of Nature in Our Lives at the Museum of Vancouver delves into the life stories of local animals and plants—how they relate to each other and how they connect people to nature in the city.

      Richmond's Lipont Place hosts Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, which focuses on the legendary RMS Titanic's compelling human stories through more than 120 authentic artifacts and extensive room re-creations.

      Arts of Resistance: Politics and The Past In Latin America at the Museum of Anthropology at UBC exhibition illustrates how Latin American communities use traditional or historic art forms to express contemporary political realities.

      In a Different Light: Reflecting on Northwest Coast Art at the Museum of Anthropology at UBC features more than 110 historical indigenous artworks and explores what we can learn from these works and how they relate to indigenous peoples’ relationships to their lands.

       

      ATTRACTIONS

      Big Splash Waterpark in Tsawwassen features various slides--including the new Boomerango--pools and hot tubs, a clubhouse, private-party cabanas, a sports bar and grill, and complimentary shuttle service from Bridgeport Skytrain Station.

      At the Bloedel Conservatory you can take in more than 200 free-flying exotic birds and 500 exotic plants and flowers.

      The 22-hectare VanDusen Botanical Garden features over 255,000 plants from around the world, a restaurant, a garden shop, and a horticulture library.

      The Vancouver Aquarium features almost 800 animal species in galleries ranging from Canada's Arctic to the Amazon rainforest.

      Stanley Park features 400 hectares of trails, gardens, beaches, and West Coast rain forest, with scenic walking and biking along the 8.8 kilometre seawall.

      Science World features hundreds of interactive exhibits in five permanent galleries, live science demonstrations and workshops, and giant movies in the Omnimax Theatre.

      The Capilano Suspension Bridge features seven cable bridges suspended in trees, the Living Forest exhibit, totem pole collection, CLIFFWALK, and Treetop Adventure.

      The Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden is an authentic representation of an age-old garden tradition that reached its peak in the Ming Dynasty.

      Screenings at the Rio Theatre of the Arnold Schwarzenegger action hits The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

      Screening at Vancity Theatre of the documentary Afghan Cycles, about young Afghan women who challenge gender and cultural barriers as they train with the Women's National Cycling Team.

      Screening at the Cinematheque of Persona, Ingmar Bergman’s 1966 rumination on art, identity, personality, and cinematic reality.

      Screening at Vancity Theatre of writer-director Bart Layton's heist film American Animalsstarring Evan Peters, Ann Dowd, and Blake Jenner.
