Shop Goss: Gatley all about local threads, beauty, and lifestyle objects

    1 of 3 2 of 3

Shop Goss is the Georgia Straight’s weekly feature, where we give you the lowdown on Metro Vancouver’s coolest independent boutiques—plus, the spirited minds behind them—that deserve a spot on your shopping radar.

This week, we meet Erin Mullaly, owner of Gatley Lifestyle Store (1136 Commercial Drive).

Describe your business in three sentences or less.

I like to think of it as a place to get anything you need for yourself, or gifts for anyone in your life. We are always looking for unique and locally made products to share with our clients.

How did you come to own/operate your own shop?

After years of working at a company full-time, I made the decision to switch gears and open my own business. My background is in interior design, and I have always had a love for fabrics. So when the opportunity to buy a small shop in my neighbourhood came up, I was excited to make the switch to fashion.

My favourite brands we carry at the moment are…

We have so many great designers in the shop right now, but some of our favorites for fashion are Allison Wonderland, UZINYC, Sunja Link, Korinne Vader, Lacausa, Mona Sultan, Claudia Schulz, Aunts and Uncles, and Fenntessa Swimwear.

We also have some great brands for beauty and lifestyle, including Picot, Woodlot, Harlow Skin Co., Bare Skin Bar, Dahlhaus, and Sunday Dry Goods.

You’re being sent to a desert island with limited Wi-Fi access for an indefinite amount of time. What three products in the shop right now would you take with you?

Wow, that actually sounds amazing—I could use a break! I would take a jar of Picot's honey-tobacco body butter to keep my skin hydrated; a large Dahlhaus coffee mug to
drink water from; and an UZINYC V-dress: it has pockets where I can gather random supplies and is super comfortable!

Name new arrival you can’t wait to show off.

I am looking forward to all of the fall lines that will start arriving in August: there are so many new designers we're adding to the lineup. I am a sweater lover, so I am really excited for the sweaters from Naïf, a Montreal-based designer, and all of the knit hats, scarves, and gloves! I love the autumn the most.

What did you most recently ring through for a customer?

Things seem to come and go in waves, but we have been selling a lot of jewellery lately, and Seattle brand Baleen is our newest line. I just sold the last pair of their “Big A**” hoops today.

My last purchase—from the store or otherwise—was…

Nala Care's natural deodorant: it is so great and it truly works! No more toxic drugstore roll-ons for this gal!

When I’m not at the shop, you can find me…

With my husband and two children—likely on a soccer field or at B.C. Place cheering on the Whitecaps.

What’s another local store/boutique/business you love?

I love supporting local in my shop and in my daily life. We are so fortunate in this city to have so many amazing independent shops, businesses, restaurants, and services. Some of my go-tos are Tight Club Athletics (261 Union Street), Pepino’s Spaghetti House (631 Commercial Drive), Kokomo (611 Gore Avenue and 2028 Vine Street), Dandelion Kids (1206 Commercial Drive and 1–101 Morrissey Road, Port Moody), and Dilly Dally Kids (1161 Commercial Drive).
