An uprising against oppression may have stormed the Bastille in France, but Vancouverites will mob the Roundhouse in Yaletown to celebrate French culture, language, and food.

The free, family-friendly Bastille Day Festival will be held tomorrow (July 14), from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre (181 Roundhouse Mews) in Yaletown.

Bastille Day, the English name for la Fête nationale (or le quatorze juillet) in France, commemorates the storming of the Bastille in Paris in 1789 that became a pivotal moment of the French Revolution, which ended the monarchy and gave way to the development of the republic.

French organizations in Vancouver collaborated in 2015 to launch the festival, which is presented by the non-profit Bastille Day Festival Society.

At the event, a French market will present a range of delicacies and delectables that France is renowned for, including offerings from Faubourg, La Baguette at compagnie, Plaisir Sucré, JB's crêpes, Damien's Belgian Waffles, and Oliver's Bread, in addition to a beer garden, French wine, and charcuterie boards.

Meanwhile, Graines de Chefs will offer entertaining and educational culinary activities for children, including competitions and quizzes about nutrition and health.

Throughout the day, there'll be live musical performances by chanteur Joshua Minsky, singer-songwriter Alisa Blanc, acoustic string ensemble Van Django, French singer Manu Reymond, and folk-fusionists Early Spirit. Later on, DJ Marc Fournier will bring the beats from 8 p.m. onward.

In light of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup, Whitecaps FC and Sport Celebration will provide sports and games to take part in. Meanwhile, the Renaissance Fencing Club will also be on hand to demonstrate the art of French classical fencing.

There'll also be a vintage car exhibition and parade, an Argentine tango performance, and Alliance Française of Vancouver, Cousteau School, Topi import, Planet France, SFU, and more will also be present.
