Steveston has evolved into one of Richmond's hipper neighbourhoods as it attracts residents and visitors keen to experience its redolent seafaring history.

And there's no better time than during the 15th annual Richmond Maritime Festival, which takes place next Saturday (July 28) and Sunday (July 29).

The family-friendly event features interactive explorations of B.C.'s West Coast heritage, along with great live music on the spacious 3.2-hectare Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site on Steveston's waterfront.

This part of Richmond was once home to 14 canneries that employed diverse workforces—including First Nations people and pioneers of Chinese and Japanese heritage.

At the festival, sea lovers can view the 115-year-old Providence and board other historic ships along the 180-metre dock.

That's in addition to boat-building demos and a celebration of wooden vessels.

Kids never know who they'll run into at the Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site.

Festivalgoers can also hear plenty of bands, including the Boom Booms, Laughing Loggers, and Beauty Shop Dolls.

And kids of all ages can enjoy spontaneous encounters with colourful creatures from the ocean, as well as mermaids, pirates, and more.

"I'd like to be under the sea...in an octopus's garden, in the shade."

Best of all, it's entirely free, courtesy of the City of Richmond in partnership with Canadian Heritage, local Re/MAX agents, Canadian Western Bank, and other sponsors.
