High bacterial counts prompt health warning about waters at Sunset and Kitsilano beaches

Vancouver Coastal Health has advised people not to swim or wade in the water at two popular local recreation spots.

High levels of E. coli bacteria have been found off Sunset and Kitsilano beaches.

Coming in contact with this pathogen elevates the risk of gastrointestinal illness.

"E.coli is an indicator organism associated with fecal contamination from human and animal sources," Vancouver Coastal Health states on its website.

In East Vancouver, Trout Lake was closed to swimming on July 19 due to high E. coli levels.
