In what has become a recurring pattern over the past few weeks, beaches that were closed in Vancouver to recreational activity due to high levels of bacteria have since been reopened.

On August 11, Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) issued a health warning, advising against wading and swimming at English Bay, Sunset Beach, and Jericho Beach due to high bacteria counts found at those locations.

As of August 9, bacteria counts at English Bay were 185 E. coli per 100 millilitres of water while Sunset Beach was at 232. Safety guidelines recommend below 200 E. coli per 100 millilitres for water activity.

Today (August 14), VCH lifted the advisories at English Bay and Sunset Beach.

However, advisories for Jericho Beach and Trout Lake remain in effect.

Trout Lake was closed back on July 19. As of August 9, the E. coli count at the lake was 205.

Meanwhile, a tugboat that capsized on the Fraser River on August 13 has resulted in beaches along the Fraser River being closed.
