This is the day when the public is supposed to celebrate their canine friends.

National Dog Day was created in 2004 by animal lover Colleen Paige to encourage the public to adopt abandoned or distressed pooches.

The website created to mark the occasion encourages citizens to donate $5 to their local shelter or animal-rescue operation.

It's also a day when people show off their lovable pets.
