New Westminster has always been a city with a tremendous heart.

But now, it can add a new claim to fame: it's the recovery capital of Canada.

That was on display this weekend when New West hosted the annual Recovery Day celebration in the Uptown area.

Huge crowds showed up for a free afternoon concert by Matthew Good, as well as performances by Royal City Wrestling.

But many were also there to show their support for eradicating the stigma that's existed for far too long around people who've struggled with addiction.

In addition, they had a chance to celebrate the many stories of success at reputable B.C. recovery houses—with some sharing their stories in 15-minute speaking presentations.

The event is put on by Recovery Day B.C., and has grown tremendously since it was launched in 2012 in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery. This year, for the first time, it was sponsored by the B.C. government.
