Vancouver Police 2019 canine calendar takes a bite out of crime to fundraise for health

While Vancouver firefighters release their annual Hall of Flame calendar full of beefcake shots, the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) is releasing a rather different type of calendar.

The 2019 Vancouver Police dog calendar showcases members of the VPD Canine Unit with their four-legged comrades as they patrol the city to take a bite out of crime.

Calendars are $15 each, with proceeds going to the B.C. Cancer Foundation and the B.C. Children's Hospital Foundation.

They can be purchased online or at VPD public information counters (3585 Graveley Street or 2120 Cambie Street), the Vancouver Police PMBA store, Vancouver Community Policing Centres, the Vancouver Police Museum, the B.C. Cancer Foundation, B.C. Children's Hospital Foundation, West Coast Veterinary Dental Services, and Vancouver locations of Tisol Pet Nutrition and Supply Stores.

On Friday (October 26), the stars of the calendar (along with their handlers) will be making an appearance at the corner of Granville and Georgia streets in the downtown core where fans can get their autograph (sort of) and calendars will be available for purchase.

The calendar has been released since 2010, raising $200,000 for charity. It was created by retired VPD Sgt. Mike Anfield to honour his wife Candy, a VPD officer who lost her battle with cancer in 2004.

It remains to be seen as to whether or not the VPD will launch a Feline Unit, with a corresponding annual calendar. However, what purpose that unit would serve—aside from washing themselves, catching mice, napping, and looking cute—remains unclear.
