Yoga practitioners looking to fine-tune their tree pose or put some rhythm into their sun salutations are in luck: the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra's School of Music is offering free yoga classes set to live classical music.

Focusing on the yin-yang flow style, the classes take place on Thursday (November 21) and November 29 from 12:15 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the school itself (843 Seymour Street).

Leading the class are Orsy Szabo and Gillian Hunter-Gibbs.

Szabo, a certified yoga teacher and registered holistic nutritionist, has been teaching acting to children of all ages at Arts Umbrella, Surrey Arts Centre, and Shadbolt Centre for the Arts since 2010. She’s also cofounder of Yellow Heart Pictures.

Hunter-Gibbs is a violin, viola, and voice performer and teacher as well as the director of the School of Music’s early years department.

“Each class brings together dynamic sequences with relaxing static postures, accompanied by calming improvised music which mirrors the shape of the class,” the school’s website says.

Parent-and-baby musical yoga classes set to live classical music are also on offer the same dates from 11:15 a.m. to 12 p.m., complete with interactive singing.

The 2018/19 season marks VSO’s 100th anniversary, and the yoga classes are among several, creative events the organization will be offering to celebrate.

More information is at the VSO School of Music.
