Forum of the Week: How to access residential care for loved ones with dementia

    1 of 1 2 of 1

Taking care of someone in the family with dementia is an act of love. It takes devotion to nurture a person whose memories are fading away.

However, some days can be rough. Normal daily activities become difficult. Memory loss, reduced ability to solve problems, confusion, difficulty in communication, and mood swings are some of the things a person living with dementia goes through.

At some point, the family member may need full-time support, and moving to a residential-care setting is the next step.

For those thinking of this option for their loved ones, the Alzheimer Society of B.C. is holding a forum on how to access and prepare for residential care. It will also provide participants an overview of how they can work with a team that will be taking care of their family member.

The event will be held at the Paetzold Health Education Centre of the Vancouver General Hospital (899 West 12th Avenue) on Saturday (December 1), from 12 noon to 4:30 p.m. To register, call 604-675-5150, or send an email to info.vancouver@alzheimerbc.org.
