B.C. Ferries is giving plenty of advance notice for the looming closure of a Vancouver Island ferry terminal.

The Duke Point destination and departure area in southeast Nanaimo will be out of service on the weekend of January 26 and 27.

"The vehicle ramp and apron at Duke Point have been in place since the terminal opened in 1997 and now need to be replaced," B.C. Ferries states on its website. "The contractor will use a barge and crane to remove the old apron and replace it with a prefabricated new one."

Ferries will travel that weekend between Tsawwassen and Departure Bay in Nanaimo. Reservations can be made on January 14.

The Duke Point terminal opened in 1997 to accommodate commercial traffic from the Tsawwassen terminal south of Vancouver.
