It's a race against time in the B.C. backcountry after a hiker appears to have been buried in an avalance today.

He was with another hiker, who survived by grabbing a tree and then called for help.

North Shore Rescue's helicopter was dispatched to an area between Runners Peak and Mount Elsay in the Mount Seymour area.

North Shore Rescue described the incident as a "possible Code Alpha avanche response".

The man who secured himself to the tree was taken out via a long-line rescue.

The avalanche risk was too high for a ground search and as of this writing, the second hiker remains missing.
