Those driving between British Columbia and Washington state today (May 2) may need to change their travel route for the time being.

A vehicle collision and fire on Highway 99 has closed the Peace Arch Border Crossing in both directions between Surrey, B.C., and Blaine, Washington.

According to a Surrey RCMP news release issued at 1:52 p.m., that around 11:30 a.m. today (May 2) Surrey RCMP responded to a report of a collision on Highway 99 about 300 metres north of the Canada–U.S. border.

Although Surrey RCMP initially reported on social media that it was a three-vehicle collision, a news release clarified that only two vehicles were involved: a Porsche Cayenne SUV and a Toyota Sienna van.

After the collision, the Toyota caught fire.

The male driver and sole occupant of the Porsche was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Meanwhile, the male driver and sole occupant of the Toyota was pronounced dead at the scene.

While traffic on Highway 99 had been closed in both directions, southbound traffic on Highway 99 has reopened while northbound traffic remains closed as the investigation continues.

Canada Border Services Agency's Pacific Region has been diverting traffic to the Pacific Highway Crossing.

Vancouver singer-songwriter Dan Mangan reported on social media that he witnessed the collision.

Anyone with information or footage of this collision is asked to contact Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or, to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
