Pornhub is keen to make Tumblr sexy again

Can you say: “Bow-chicka-buy-now”?

It was a sad day for many when Tumblr announced it was purging its platform of NSFW posts. But a recent flirtation from Pornhub, a digital pornography platform, reveals that not all hope is lost for the once beloved blog.

The Verizon Media Group’s social sharing platform was initially popularized for its untethered adult content and promotion of judgement-free sexual expression.

Tumblr once served as a friendly hub for a vast number of marginalized communities, like the LGBTQ identifying, sex workers, and adult entertainers—users often snubbed by other platforms, like Instagram and Twitter. Due to the conservative guidelines on most social media sites, posts and profiles showing nudity or provocative content are quickly flagged and removed for defying company policy.

Tumblr stated its anti-pornography ban was a response to issues around content policing. The company was specifically focused on reducing and eliminating the proliferation of underage content.

When the company’s CEO, Jeff D’Onofrio, announced in December that Tumblr was effectively initiating the ban on nudity and sexually-provocative content, many warned the sanitization would mark the end of the longstanding blog.

And critics weren't wrong. Tumblr has been limping along since the new policy came into effect. According to statistics published by SimilarWeb, views dropped from 521 million to 437 million between December of 2018 and January of 2019. Nearly another million visits fell off the following month.

It began to look like all hope was lost for the once-trailblazing website.

Recently, however, an article in the Wall Street Journal quotes internal sources who say Verizon is looking to “unload” Tumblr.

In a tweet posted in Decemeber, Pornhub was one of the first to publicly announce intentions to buy in.

Last week, Pornhub Vice President Corey Price further stoked the fire when he sent in an email to BuzzFeed News restating the company’s extreme interest in purchasing the platform.

“There are obvious synergies between the two brands and value Pornhub could derive from Tumblr,” Price told a Buzzfeed reporter. “We’re extremely interested in acquiring the platform and are very much looking forward to one day restoring it to its former glory with NSFW content.”

While an official statement addressing the rumours has yet to come from the Tumblr camp, Pornhub is clearly still hot under the collar for a cheeky ménage between the two websites.
