When people get behind the wheel, they assume that the wheels are securely attached to their vehicle.

But on June 11, a motorist on Marine Way near Byrne Road in Burnaby was shocked when the wheel came off. Nobody was injured.

According to Burnaby RCMP, the driver believes that someone loosened the lug nuts, causing this to occur.

Then on June 18, the Mounties received another report of wheel lug nuts being loosened, this time from a parked vehicle in the 3500 block of Brighton Avenue. This is believed to have happened between 4:30 and 5:10 p.m. on June 17.

"Both of these incidents could have had serious consequences and it’s a good reminder for drivers to always ensure vehicles are safe to drive," Cpl. Daniela Panesar said in a news release. "While we are unsure if these incidents are linked, we are asking that drivers make sure to check their wheels before driving to ensure wheel lug nuts have not been loosened."
