Surrey RCMP raises Pride flag in face of opposition by social conservatives

This morning was a joyous occasion for LGBT Mounties and their allies as the Pride flag was raised at the Surrey RCMP detachment.

But it didn't come without opposition from social conservatives, who were led by Culture Guard's Kari Simpson.

The group warned last week that there would be a large protest this morning because they view the Pride flag as "blatantly political".

But when Simpson's group of about 20 arrived, they were met by a counter-demonstration of more than a dozen LGBT rights activists who supported the Mounties' decision to raise the flag.

"Things got a little heated at the protests with each group trying to have their say and drown out each other," News 1130 reporter Lasia Kretzel tweeted.
