      Elevate Music Project: Night One at the Biltmore Cabaret features performances by Strange Breed, the Fallaways, Adam Mah, Ivan Hartle, Antonio Larosa, and Nikita Afonso (above).

      Canadian pop singer-songwriter Tyler Shaw plays the Imperial Vancouver, with guest Craig Strickland.

      Bluegrass quintet the Tim O'Brien Band plays the WISE Hall, with guests Burying Ground.

      Local blues-rock singer and guitarist Steve Kozak leads his band at Frankie's Jazz.

      Soul–jazz and funk singer Dawn Pemberton leads her band at Maple Ridge's ACT Arts Centre.

      Theo and the Thugs (former members of Gob) play Gob songs and new originals at the Waldorf Hotel, with guests You Big Idiot, Not Inpublic, and Murderers.

      JB the First Lady performs at Passion for Justice, a fundraiser at the WISE Hall that supports the Pivot Legal Society's ongoing work to fight for laws, policies, and practices that affirm dignity.

      The Aurora Winter Festival runs through January 5 on the PNE Grounds, featuring various rides and attractions, including a tube park.

      The Peace Arch Weavers & Spinners Guild's two-day Fibre Arts Market at Surrey's Turnbull Gallery features unique knitted, woven, and felted fashion accessories, from rugs and blankets to jewelry and silk scarves.

      The three-day Britannia Christmas Craft Fair at Britannia Community Centre features a variety of handmade creations from local artists.

       

      FOOD & DRINK

      Art x Craft Wabori at Dayton Boots explores craft brewing, distilling, and Irezumi, the Japanese art of tattooing. 

      Beaujolais Nouveau 2019 at Alliance Française gives wine lovers the chance to taste this first French wine of the year, and enjoy all-you-can-eat French-style “bouchées” and French music.

       

      TAKE ACTION

      Plastic Oceans Canada presents Rethink Plastic, Business Edition, an interactive workshop at Vancouver Public Library on how to effectively audit and reduce plastic waste in a business environment.

                         

      COMEDY

      Teen Angst Night at the Fox Cabaret is a comedic reading series of teenage notebooks, hosted by Sara Bynoe.

      Inside Man at the Little Mountain Gallery is a comedy show about masculinity featuring David Hatfield.

      Cirque du Soleil presents a performance of Luzia under the Grand Chapiteau (Big Top) at Concord Pacific Place.

      The two-night History of Burlesque at New Westminster's Columbia Theatre features live vocals, acrobatics, comedy, couture, and drag.

      Chris Barton

      Amber Funk Barton performs her solo work VAST at Scotiabank Dance Centre as part of the 12th biennial Dance in Vancouver.

      The Dancers of Damelahamid draw from Indigenous foundational stories to explore and redefine contemporary reflections of Indigenous identity in Minowin at the Historic Theatre.

       

      LITERARY

      Vancouver university instructor Connie Braun reads from her poetry at Fort Langley's Fort Gallery.

      Opera Mariposa presents Puccini's one-act opera Gianni Schicchi presented alongside fully staged excerpts from other Italian operas at St. Faith Anglican Church.

      The UBC Symphonic Wind Ensemble and UBC Concert Winds present The Automatic Earth: A Concert for the Climate at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts.

      The SAMC Orchestra plays the overture to Bellini’s opera Norma and the Symphony No. 2 "Little Russian" by Tchaikovsky at Langley's Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church.

      Fourteen-year-old pianist Spencer Tsai performs Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1 at Christ Church Cathedral.

      The Aurora Chamber Choir performs its opening concert of the 2019/2020 season, Meet Me Here, at Canadian Memorial United Church.

      Performance at the Firehall Arts Centre of FADO: The Saddest Music in the World, the story of a young woman confronting her country’s fascist past and her own identity.

      Theatre Replacement presents a performance at the York Theatre of the East Vancouver-set family show East Van Panto: Pinocchio.

      Performance at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage of the romantic musical The Sound of Music.

      Performance at Metro Theatre of A Bunch of Amateurs, a comedy about an aging Hollywood action hero playing King Lear in an amateur dramatic society.

      UBC Theatre and Film presents a performance of Timothy Findlay's World War I drama The Wars, adapted by Dennis Garnhum, at Frederic Wood Theatre.

      Performance at the Nest of Seminar, a comedy about four young novelists who sign up for private writing classes with an international literary figure.

      The 2019-2020 CapU Theatre Series presents a performance of Macbeth, one of Shakespeare’s most popular tragedies, at the BlueShore Financial Centre for the Performing Arts.

      The Search Party presents the Western Canadian premiere at the Historic Theatre of French playwight Florian Zeller's The Father, translated by Christopher Hampton.

      Performance at North Van's Deep Cove Shaw Theatre of the off-Broadway musical Forever Plaid.

      It’s a Wonderful Life meets Modern Family in the Canadian comedy It's a Wonderful Christmas-ish Holiday Miracle at the Goldcorp Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre.

      Transits and Returns at the Vancouver Art Gallery explores the dynamic between place and movement in the work of twenty-one Indigenous artists from around the Pacific.

      Robert Rauschenberg 1965-1980 at the Vancouver Art Gallery features rarely seen prints, drawings, collages, sculptural works, and large-scale works from one of the most experimental periods in the artist's career.

      There is Truth Here at the Museum of Vancouver focuses on rare surviving artworks created by children who attended the Inkameep Day School (Okanagan), St. Michael’s Indian Residential School (Alert Bay); the Alberni Indian Residential School (Vancouver Island); and Mackay Indian Residential School (Manitoba).

      Playing with Fire: Ceramics of the Extraordinary at the Museum of Anthropology at UBC showcases ceramic works by 11 B.C.-based artists expressing strong opinions on urgent social issues.

      In a Different Light: Reflecting on Northwest Coast Art at the Museum of Anthropology at UBC features more than 110 historical Indigenous artworks and explores what we can learn from these works and how they relate to Indigenous peoples’ relationships to their lands.

      Haida Now: A Visual Feast of Innovation and Tradition at the Museum of Vancouver is guest-curated by Kwiaahwah Jones and features more than 450 works by carvers, weavers, photographers, and printmakers, collected as early as the 1890s.

       

      ATTRACTIONS

      The Vancouver Aquarium features almost 800 animal species in galleries ranging from Canada's Arctic to the Amazon rainforest.

      North Vancouver's Grouse Mountain features a Skyride to the peak with views of the city and the Pacific Ocean.

      The 22-hectare VanDusen Botanical Garden features over 255,000 plants from around the world and almost two dozen sculptures.

      Parq Vancouver is a 24-hour casino with 600 slot machines and 75 table games, eight restaurants and lounges, and the sixth-floor outdoor Parq.

      Science World features hundreds of interactive exhibits in five permanent galleries, live science demonstrations and workshops, and giant movies in the Omnimax Theatre.

      At the Bloedel Conservatory you can take in more than 200 free-flying exotic birds and 500 exotic plants and flowers.

      Capilano Suspension Bridge features seven cable bridges suspended in trees, the Living Forest exhibit, totem-pole collection, Cliffwalk, and Treetop Adventure.

      Nitobe Memorial Garden is a traditional Japanese garden located at the University of British Columbia with waterfalls, stone lanterns, audio guides and tours, and a ceremonial teahouse.

      Screening at Vancity Theatre of Martin Scorsese's new gangster flick The Irishman, starring Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Al Pacino as Jimmy Hoffa.

      Screenings at the Cinematheque of Finland's One Last Deal and Austria's The Tobacconist as part of the 22nd annual European Union Film Festival.

      Late-night screening at the Rio Theatre of a 20th anniversary remaster of Hideo Nakato's J-horror classic Ringu as part of the Rio Grind Film Festival.
