Alex Fraser Bridge partially reopens after closure due to icebombs

Not only are sleet, snow, and slush falling in Metro Vancouver, but also icebombs.

At 10:38 a.m. this morning (January 10), DriveBC Lower Mainland stated on social media that the Alex Fraser Bridge—which connected Richmond and New Westminster with Delta—had been closed in both directions due to ice from the bridge’s cables.

The Delta Police Department Traffic Unit announced on social media at 11:14 a.m. that one lane was reopened for each direction as an assessment continued on.

DriveBC Lower Mainland stated at 11:35 a.m. that one lane northbound and two lanes southbound were open but warned drivers to expect delays.

Although a solution to this problem was introduced after it occurred in previous years, News 1130 reported that the cable-collar cleaning system, which involves technicians manually releasing by rope access, could not be deployed due to winds.
