A citizen who followed an impaired driver managed to help prevent any potential serious collisions, injuries, or even fatalities.

Prior to 5 p.m. on January 2, a citizen called 911 to report a possible impaired driver, according to Burnaby RCMP.

The citizen, who had noticed the driver’s behavior as his vehicle headed along Highway 1 past Langley, followed the driver into Burnaby while contacting police to provide updates along the way. There were also two young children in his vehicle.

The driver had driven into a ditch near the intersection of Cariboo Road and Gagalrdi Way in Burnaby.

When officers located the vehicle, it was at Eastlake Drive and Beaverbrook Drive where another vehicle had allegedly rear-ended him.

After the driver failed to stop for police, officers followed him until he stopped in a cul-de-sac at Eastlake Drive.

When he exited his vehicle, officers took him into custody for driving while impaired.

Burnaby RCMP Victim Services took care of his two children until a family member arrived to pick them up.

The 44-year-old driver is facing several charges, including being impaired while driving, driving while suspended, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
