As wintry weather continues across the Lower Mainland, a driver had to be hospitalized after a chunk of ice crashed through his windshield.

B.C. RCMP stated that prior to 2 p.m. today (January 17), traffic service officers responded to a report about a large piece of ice that had fallen through the windshield of a vehicle on Highway 99 at the Massey Tunnel in Richmond.

The ice had smashed through the windshield and injured the driver, a 49-year-old man from Surrey, who was the sole occupant.

He was taken to hospital with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

A southbound lane on Highway 99 had been closed while emergency responders attended to the victim but it has since been reopened.

B.C. RCMP Sgt. Janelle Shoihet stated in a news release that they are still trying to determine the source of the ice. RCMP is not offering any further information about this case.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage is asked to contact the Lower Mainland Traffic Services at 604-526-9744.
